Bénédicte Decourt Hollender, Aspects de la magistrature sénatoriale du royaume de Piémont-Sardaigne au XIXe siècle 1814-1860)

Set within the framework of a research programme dedicated to magistrates' careers in the Senates of the Piémont-Sardaigne kingdom, the purpose of this study is to trace the social origins of senators during the period from 1814 to 1860. The aim is to understand the sociological and professional transformations of this body based on the individualized background studies of approximately 120 magistrates, who carried out all, or part of their career, within the Senates. At the time of the Restoration, the recruitment of magistrates seemed to align with the tradition of giving preference to candidates from socially recognized families: high offices were shared between local nobility and enriched middle-class in search of notability. However, gradually, throughout the studied period, judicial recruitment revealed a redistribution of the elites, which allowed the settlement of a renewed magistracy.
